Dr. Adriana Di Polo’s laboratory is dedicated to advancing the understanding of the pathobiology of retinal ganglion cells (RGC). These neurons play a critical role in transmitting visual information from the retina to the brain via their axons in the optic nerve.

Our main focus is understanding the molecular and cellular mechanisms behind RGC death, especially in the context of glaucoma, a leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. Despite its prevalence, current therapeutic approaches are insufficient, leaving a substantial gap in our ability to halt the progression of vision loss.

Our research aims to dissect intricate pathways and identify key factors in RGC degeneration, seeking potential therapeutic targets. Ultimately, our goal is to develop innovative strategies for preserving and ideally restoring vision.
