Area of research:

Dr. Xavier Sánchez Sáez is an Assistant Professor at the University of Alicante in the Department of Physiology, Genetics, and Microbiology. He earned his Ph.D. in Experimental and Applied Biology from the University of Alicante and holds a Master’s degree in Neuroscience from the Complutense University of Madrid. His research focuses on retinal dysfunction in neurodegenerative disease, with particular interest in how Parkinson’s disease affects visual pathways. His experience includes a predoctoral stay at the Institute of Neurosciences Paris-Saclay and a Postdoc at the Research Center of the University Hospital of Montréal, where he investigated microglia and mitochondrial dynamics in retinal ganglion cells using advanced imaging approaches.

His expertise covers ocular neurobiology, neuroinflammation, and the development of ex vivo retinal models. His work involves laboratory animal models of retinal pathologies, as well as a range of imaging and electrophysiological techniques aimed at uncovering early mechanisms of disease progression in the retina.
