Postdoctoral Fellow
Education:
- Postdoctoral Fellow, Université de Montréal, Canada
- Ph.D. in Ophthalmology, Tohoku University Graduate School of Medicine, Japan
- M.D., Yamagata University Faculty of Medicine, Japan
Email: yukihiro.shiga@umontreal.ca
Current position: Assistant Professor at Centre de recherche de l’Hôpital Maisonneuve-Rosemont (CR-HMR)
Area of research:
Dr. Shiga received his MD from Yamagata University, followed by a glaucoma fellowship in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Tohoku University (Japan). He obtained his PhD from Tohoku University, where he studied genetics and ocular blood flow alterations in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma, as well as the molecular basis of retinal ganglion cell degeneration.
Dr. Shiga completed his postdoctoral fellowship in the Department of Neuroscience at the Université de Montréal (Quebec, Canada), under the supervision of Prof. Adriana Di Polo. During his postdoctoral training, Dr. Shiga investigated calcium and metabolic dysregulation in retinal ganglion cells and retinal microvasculature in glaucoma, supported by prestigious awards from the Fonds de recherche du Québec – Santé (FRQS), the Uehara Memorial Foundation, and the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR).
Dr. Shiga is currently a principal investigator at the Maisonneuve-Rosemont Hospital Research Centre (Quebec, Canada), where he heads the Systems Neuroimaging and Genomics Unit. He also serves as an assistant professor in the Department of Ophthalmology at the Université de Montréal. His laboratory focuses on establishing an integrated platform combining multiscale neuroimaging and genomics to better understand biological diversity. Using these tools, his team aims to uncover the molecular and cellular foundations of neural circuits in health and disease, including glaucoma, with the ultimate goal of developing precision strategies to preserve vision.
